Mapathons is now recruiting interested participants for two events at Virginia Tech and George Mason University in Spring 2025.

Drop in, or join us for a full day of collaboration and (friendly) competition to transform seventeenth-century maps of Virginia, England, and Europe into publishable data layers.

Transforming maps into georeferenced data will support the work of other students, educators, and scholars interested in spatial and environmental history. Examples of related projects include Early Modern Digital Itineraries, Dangerous Harbor, and Death by Numbers.

Teams of participants will receive basic training in using GIS annotation and transformation tools such as Recogito and QGIS.

Further compensated travel and publication opportunities are available for graduate and advanced undergraduate students to act as team leads.
